Why we keep bees on the farm

Environment

We all want to do our bit to help the planet and our environment, and as part of that we aim to produce some of the finest local honey for our customers. We intend to have runny honey and chunk honey which is a slice of honeycomb in a jar surrounded by honey and the lovely and quite special comb honey slices (if you have not tasted honeycomb on toast you have not lived).  Not only will it be good for our customers to have locally produced honey but honey makes an ideal special gift for family at any time of the year or at Christmas time (we even have Christmas labelled honey).  It would make a wonderful gift for those that stay at our campsite to take home to their loved ones and friends being a true slice of Devon and its wonderful countryside.

The importance of bees

Bees are so important and apparently are the third most important domestic animal after cattle and pigs. Bees are so important for crop pollination and it is said that in the UK that every third mouthful of food we eat is available because of the honeybee! If it was not for bees so many crops would be hard to produce and therefore the cost would go up substantially.  Things like fruit trees, apples and cherries, many types of berry rely heavily on bee pollination.

In the case of raspberries, blackberries and blueberries bees are considered essential. Vegetables like carrots, broccoli and pumpkins would be hard to produce.  The loss of bees would affect some ingredients in medical and cosmetic products as well as not having honey itself!

Threats to bees

Bees are under threat these days from the varoa mite and the latest major predator to pollinators is the yellow legged Asian Hornet.  We can all do our part by being able to recognise its nest and report it as they start to become established in the UK.  The honeybee is said to be one of the main food sources of the Yellow legged Asian hornets diet!
