As a traditional dairy farm we have a deep-rooted commitment to sustainability. Most of the food our animals eat is grown and harvested right here on the farm. Our eco-friendly approach includes planting wildflower meadows, preserving centuries-old trees, and maintaining hedgerows teeming with food and shelter for local wildlife. We’re proud to be among the first farms in the area awarded Mid Tier Countryside Stewardship by the government, recognising our dedication to sustainable farming.
Our grass-fed herd, primarily British Friesians and British Friesian-Jersey crosses, thrives in the lush green fields surrounding the farm. Their milk is proudly labeled as authentic free-range, and many of our cows produce A2 milk—a variety known for its smooth taste and digestive benefits.
For most of the year, our cows graze on fresh pasture, supplemented by crops we grow ourselves. In winter, they enjoy hay and silage (stored, fermented grass) for optimal nutrition. We also grow our own corn, which we grind into a hearty meal—similar to porridge oats—for the cows. When the corn is harvested, its straw is baled for winter bedding. To further support their diet, we provide a small amount of additional feed, known as “cake.” Since 2019, we have transitioned to soya-free cake, which our cows enjoy during milking time.
Our cows are milked twice a day. We operate a closed herd, meaning we do not buy in cattle. This practice helps maintain herd health and allows us to trace many of our cows back several generations. Currently, our herd consists of around 80 cows, plus their followers—young calves and heifers that will one day join the milking herd.
West Middlewick Farm is home to a thriving flock of sheep, roaming our fields. Raised with care, our sheep enjoy a natural, outdoor lifestyle, grazing on rich pasture that enhances their health and well-being. These traditional, farm-reared sheep contribute to the farm’s sustainable way of life, producing high-quality lamb that is available through our farm shop. Visitors can often see the sheep in the fields, and during lambing season, it’s a special time to witness new life on the farm.
